Isa Genzken

If drawing influence from your surroundings is anything to go by, then the visual skyline of Isa Genzken’s latest exhibition is drenched with this sentiment. The Berlin artist echoes dimensions of her favourite city, New York, with an array of objects galvanizing raised structures.

Crate upon crate are stacked high up towards the rafters of the Hauser & Wirth temporary exhibition space at Hubertus Exhibitions, occupied with plant pots placed tentatively on the edge of the boxes with each individual object dividing the single structure into separate fragile elements.

Isa Genzken fabricates the skyline of her work with paintings of Disney characters loosely connected to the body of the sculptures. Modernity and Urban architecture have been central to the discourse of Genzken’s work throughout her career, with an intense philosophy of minimalism which she crafts into her own realm. One of her most familiar pieces, the 8 metre high enamelled stainless steel Rose (1993/97) situated in Leipzig, is defining of her use of vivacious colour and industrial materials pulling towards the geometries of modernist architecture.

The walls of the gallery are densely mapped with collages of paintings and images of the artist’s personal life and experiences. The collages mesh together reproductions of renaissance paintings to kitsch greeting cards and glossy magazine adverts. It is an amalgamation of the diversity that is seen through the eyes of individuals on a daily basis.

Walking around Genzken’s work is like entering a microcosm of a sprawling metropolis. The details that are available at eyesight take the viewer inside the sculpture, transforming the miscellaneous sculpture into anthropomorphic forms.  The essence of the work explores human qualities of fragility and haphazardness.

MoMA New York will be hosting Gezken’s first US museum survey in November 2013, making this exhibition that is currently open until the 19th May a more essential excursion.
